It's Monday! And here's my #MondayMashup for 2-29-2016

It's Leap Day! How nice waking up to know we have an extra day this year. I wonder what all I can get accomplished? Hm. Remains to be seen. I just know that my to-do list is mighty long, so I'm grateful for the day. How about you? What are your plans for this beautiful last day of February?

Here's my #MondayMashup for today!

Re-released! As you may know, I've retired my Bella Masters pen name. I guess I'm getting too old to juggle two of everything as an author. Either that, or I've just realized that one pen name is better than two, and to heck with those who think you can't write both sweet and erotic under the same name. Phooey. I'm just being me from now on!

But I digress. I'm slowly re-releasing Bella's titles as Maddie James. Sometimes I'm packaging them differently, such as in a collection. Bella wrote a lot of short stories, so that makes sense to me. The latest release, however, is pretty much intact as it was, although I've added a teaser at the end for yet-to-be published short story that will be included in an upcoming anthology.

Previously titled Switched, I've now re-released this one as Cuffed, Again by Maddie James. Here are the details.

The Chief Financial Officer of the non-profit Cerise Thacker runs has been cooking her books. The DA fears the CFO’s deep family roots will come after her, particularly after the CFO states he will “effing see to her death.” So she’s whisked away in a Yellow Cab into a short term police protection program to keep her safe.

The cabbie? Isaac Walker, undercover cop. For the duration, Isaac will be her protector, even though she doesn’t want protection.

But Cerise and Isaac are not strangers. They’d shared a role play Fem Domme/sub encounter a year earlier–neither of them revealing who they really were. Now they are thrust together in a situation of extreme danger, passion, and trust, where Isaac must remain in control of the situation at all costs, even though he so very much wants to give it up to Cerise. And Cerise must do everything that Isaac says to the letter, even if she doesn’t want to. That is, if they want to get out of this thing alive.

New in Paperback! Two new titles are now available in paperback! Both books are #FREE in ebook formats. Get your print copies at these links:

Check me out. It's #WriterWednesday

It's #WriterWednesday and what do writers do? Well, I've been up since 5:30 a.m. hoping to write. Instead, I've checked on a couple of blogs, commented on one, posted to Twitter and Facebook and Google+, approved a print book for the marketplace, emailed a friend, made coffee, and shared a brief conversation with my sweetie. Oh, and what still needs to be done is walk the dog, eat something, take a shower, and review my day's work plan before I need to leave the house by 9 a.m. for a consulting gig.

When does the writing happen? Well, not today, obviously. Maybe later. Or maybe tomorrow. (I've got to stop subscribing to the Scarlett O'Hara philosophy of life...)

But that's the writer's life. Right? #writerwoes #procrastination #needtorethinkpriorities?

At any rate, you can find me today over at one of those blogs I visited this morning. I'm chatting today with NY Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Joan Reeves over on her Sling Words blog. Come by and learn about my latest release, Tempt MeI'm even giving away a print book by 10 p.m. EST this evening.

Come check me out! #itsawritersthing

7 Fantastic Happily-Ever-Afters That Will Save You Money

Looking for you next fantastic read but not sure you want to invest in a new author, or get hooked into a new series? Dollars still short after the holidays? We've all been there. (hey, I'm there right now!) But if you are looking to get your romantic, HEA fix for free or cheap, here are 7 stories of mine that fill that bill!

Perfectly Matched (FREE series starter)

A Legend's Landing Bed & Breakfast Story: The Matchmaking Chef

In this first installment of The Matchmaking Chef series, we find Suzie Matthews hard at work on her new cookbook, Perfectly Matched. After finding her own perfect match with her husband, Brad, in Bed, Breakfast & You, and then working a little magic reuniting her sister with her high school boyfriend, Matt, in Home for the Holidays, Suzie feels confident in her new-found matchmaking skills. So, she asks the local “wallflower” Mary Lou, to help her with a project-Mary Lou not realizing that "project" is herself.

Mary Lou Picketts dreams of falling in love with country music star, Nash Rhodes, but is ready to settle for Thurman Phillips down the street, if she has to. But she doesn’t want to. Not really. When Nash comes to Legend for a music benefit and stays at the lodge, Suzie sets out to perfectly match this miss-matched couple.

Once in a Blue Moon (FREE series starter)

This is Part One of a serialized novel. The entire novel, titled Entranced, is also available for sale.

Can souls touch through time and hold on when all odds are against them?

In Part One of Entranced, titled Once Upon a Blue Moon, Claire Winslow vacations on an East Coast barrier island, content with her life and her potential future—until the illusion of a man walking the misty shore haunts her. Then one kiss—a beautiful, soulful, stolen kiss in the night—and her life changes forever.

Nearly 300 years past, Jack Porter is in hot pursuit of his kidnapped wife. Not an easy feat considering the year is 1718 and the kidnapper is the notorious pirate Blackbeard aka Edward Teach. Determined to rescue his wife and take the pirate’s head in the process, Jack steals aboard the pirate’s ship to save her.

Jack and Claire set out on a wild search through time, not only for the resolution to a powerful attraction between them, but also for a historical artifact that holds the key to their future happiness—the coveted silver-plated chalice made from Blackbeard’s skull.

The Montana McKennas Prequel (FREE series starter)

Welcome to McKenna Ranch!

Meet Brody, Callie, Mercer and Parker--the four siblings in the clan of James McKenna, a Montana rancher. Growing up on the ranch was a great life, until Callie and Parker's mother passed away, leaving James a widower. It wasn't long, however, before he remarried, bringing stepmother Liz into their lives, along with her son, Brody. Soon, James and Liz added a new McKenna to the family, when daughter Mercer was born.

Brothers and sisters are prone to disagreements and this Brady Bunch family of step, half, and full siblings is no exception. As they grew up on the ranch, they learned values that stuck with them throughout their lives--even though they may live apart as adults. But there is one thing that will bring them all back together. Their father's only wish.

Beginning with a short prequel novella that tells the story of James McKenna and Liz Caldera, and how they came to blend their families, these stories put you on the McKenna Ranch near Yellowstone National Park. This series leads off with Jan Scarbrough's Brody, with Maddie James' Callie to follow, while the siblings begin the long road home. These sweet to sexy stories give you a glimpse into Montana rodeo and ranch life, and of course, provide lots of contemporary cowboy love and romance.

Tempt Me (FREE Part 1 at iBooks only)

Detective Jordan Cross has one thing on her mind—get the bastard killing kids in her small southern city; the person she thinks is also responsible for her niece’s disappearance. Journalist Tate Walker has a similar goal—keep the people of his city informed about the serial killer, and perhaps write a Pulitzer-worthy story in the process.

When Jordan and Tate’s lives careen together around the case, they pick up the battles of their pasts and carry them forward—battles of trust and mistrust, lust and love, truths and misunderstandings. Determined to keep her focus on the case, Jordan finds it difficult to resist Tate’s sexual temptations. Tate uses every advantage to tempt her back into his bed.

Then, thrust into a dangerous situation, those battles suddenly fall away—and the only battle left to fight is for their lives, and their love.

Get Part I at iBOOKS. (the full novel is available at all other major retailers)

The Soul Mates Trilogy (Three full-length, complete novels in one ebook volume for 99cents--February only!)

The complete trilogy of the Soul Mates time travel series.
Book One: Entranced

Claire Winslow vacations on an East Coast barrier island, content with her life and her potential future--until the illusion of a man walking the misty shore haunts her. Then one kiss--a beautiful, soulful, stolen kiss in the night--and her life changes forever.

Nearly 300 years past, Jack Porter is in hot pursuit of his kidnapped wife. Not an easy feat considering the year is 1718 and the kidnapper is the notorious pirate Blackbeard aka Edward Teach. Determined to rescue his wife and take the pirate's head in the process, Jack steals aboard the pirate's ship to save her.

Entranced sends Jack and Claire on a wild search through time, not only for the resolution to a powerful attraction between them, but also for a historical artifact that holds the key to their future happiness--the coveted silver-plated chalice made from Blackbeard's skull.

Book Two: Brazen

Pitched from a ship during a violent storm in the year 1746, Victoria Porter washes ashore, soon to be rescued by a man on a strange mechanical beast who whisks her away into a world beyond anything she could have imagined.

In 2014, Colton MacKenzie fears he has written his last bestselling horror novel until he discovers two things--The Cult of Teach and a tantalizing nymph wandering an Ocracoke Island beach. Fascinated by the history that surrounds the Legend of Blackbeard's Chalice, he seeks to learn more about these modern-day pirates and hopefully write a bestseller using the premise. He'd planned on riding this ride solo until the strange waif on the back of his Harley touches him in ways his demons hadn't let anyone touch in a long, long time....

Book Three: Entangled

Jackson Porter seeks to fulfill his mother, Claire Porter's, dying request, and find answers about the imaginary lover who haunts his nights. His future, he learns, is in a place called Ohio, miles and centuries away from his barrier island home in 1745. The land, his dying mother tells him, is his legacy. She urges him to claim it.

In the year 2038, Kari Upton is driven to fight federal sanctions to save her land and her valuable poppy crops. Her upcoming marriage is one of convenience. Marrying Tye Gentry will save her Ohio farmland. There is no other way to gain power than to marry him and ride on his father's political coattails to the state legislature. And all would be perfect if it weren't for those erotic dreams of a man with long dark hair who haunts her day and night....

Today's #FridayFeature with JC Wardon's ZEUS!

If you've not picked up a book by JC Wardon yet, and if you love paranormal romance with a kick of erotic, then pick up one of her latest. Zeus: Unbound is book 9 in her Cavanaugh series--a series that will keep you on the edge of your seat with suspense, romance, mystical beings and paranormal elements--all tied up in the name of family.

And speaking of all tied up, Zeus is one of the spicier books in the series, so if you like 'em hot, here you go. I highly recommend this book!

The Cavanaugh Series, Book 9

Is he doomed to loneliness after growing as dark as the demons he hunts in the BDSM clubs around the globe? Or will submissive acceptance from the strongest woman he has ever met be enough to save him from a solitary life forever condemned?

Zeus Cavanaugh Whitehawk can’t afford to relinquish control. Publicly or personally. His body holds powers that can kill, and after years of hunting demons, he feels tainted with the growing darkness in his soul.

Sabia Ilie lost her promised mate and her Lycanthrope pack to the mystical Cavanaugh clan several months earlier, and now the oldest of their sons has taken over her life. He’s a bossy brute, a dark and dangerous demon hunter, but beneath the hard surface, she’s sure there is just a man who struggles to remember his humanity.

The question is… Just how much of her life is she willing to risk losing, to save his?

Today's #ThrowbackThursday with Jan Scarbrough

#ThrowbackThursday—A long journey for Tangled Memories

1999 - First Digital Edition published by Starlight Writer Publications
2001 - First Print Edition published by ImaJinn Books
2008 - Second eBook Edition published by The Wild Rose Press
2011 - Turquoise Morning Press electronic and print release
2016 - Saddle Horse Press electronic release

When I was thirty-eight, I almost died. I was in the intensive care unit for four days. After I recovered, I decided it was time to make my dream of becoming a novelist come true.

After my life-threatening illness, I wondered “what if” we were all given second chances. What would we do? And especially, what would happen to a heroine if she were given another chance to find her true love? In Tangled Memories, there’s a supernatural element that makes for a happy ending.

I wrote Tangled Memories, then called Window of My Heart, and entered it in the Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart contest. It failed miserably. Then one of my fellow Kentucky Romance Writers graciously gave me a lesson on plotting. I rewrote the book and entered Window of My Heart again. It was a finalist! That was in 1994.

When the book didn’t sell, I contracted with a new “ebook” company called Starlight Writer Publications. This was before ebook readers. Needless-to-say, I didn’t have much success with the book, now called Tangled Memories.

Then a new small publisher started with an emphasis on paranormal romance. I submitted my manuscript, and ImaJinn Books accepted. I was so excited to have a paperback book in my hands!

When I received my rights back, I submitted Tangled Memories to
another ebook publisher called Wild Rose Press. It didn’t get much attention there. I eventually pulled it, and Turquoise Morning Press released it in print and ebook.

Move on to January 2016. With my rights back once more, I self-published Tangled Memories under my Saddle Horse Press name. Before releasing it, I gave the manuscript a polish, a thorough edit, and a new cover. The story is the same, but the writing is sharper, cleaner. I’ve grown as a writer, and I’m proud of the book.

Thanks to technology, Tangled Memories is still available to readers twenty-three years after I first wrote it.
After losing his wife, Dr. Alexander Dominican is determined his infant daughter will not grow up motherless as he did. Offering sensible, kind kindergarten teacher Mary Adams a marriage of convenience seems like the perfect solution. The widow’s husband left her with a mountain of debt. For Alex, paying it off is a small price to pay for his daughter’s happiness. Until his sensible new wife begins to lose her mind.

On the day of their marriage, Mary starts having frightening hallucinations of medieval England—visions that feel more like the memories of woman who lived centuries before. More terrifying, someone—or some thing—is stalking the new mistress of Marchbrook Manor. Could it be one of the sinister servants? Or Alex himself? Alex is reawakening hidden desires and longings in Mary, but until she can untangle the web of nightmares and secrets, she can trust no one. Not even Alex.

Alex has no idea he’s unleashing a destiny that’s taken him seven hundred years to fulfill.

If Alex and Mary are to salvage their future, they must first unravel centuries of…Tangled Memories.

Contemplating a Cover on #WriterWednesday with Maddie James

Judge a book by its cover?

Does the cover really influence your book buying habits?

Have you ever bought a book with a blank cover?

Getting a new cover for an upcoming book is always exciting. There is just something so concrete about seeing the story in your head, manifest itself in a tangible object. Well, tangible in the way that potentially you know you'll hold that print book in your hand one day. Not to mention that seeing that image on your computer screen allows for touching. Right?

At any rate, tangible or not, covers tell a story about the book. Or they should. Somewhat.

A good book cover should provide some clues to the reader (aka potential buyer) about your book. The cover won't tell the whole story, and it shouldn't. It should provide the essence of the story, and it should be engaging enough that it compels you to read the book description.

The book cover is the first shot an author has of grabbing the reader's attention. The book description is second. And then the actual book content itself, generally comes third. So a lot is riding on the cover selection.

Visual presentation, color, balance of graphics, font and font size, as well as the amount of text and placement on the cover, all plays part of a bigger picture. The cover should fit the book genre it is representing, and should be age appropriate for the end buyer. Some ebook retailers have restrictions on the heat level of a cover (body parts, nudity, etc.) and so do many booksellers.

So, choosing a cover is important. And now I'm deciding between two of mine.

Titled, The Cowboy's Secret Baby, this book is a contemporary western romance set on a working ranch in Colorado. And lucky for me, I have two covers to choose from. I'm leaning one way -- several of my readers and author friends are leaning the other. I'd love to know your thoughts. Which of the two covers below would make you pick up the book first? I'd love to have your input. Please comment below!

Today's #TuesdayTeaser from Entranced by Maddie James

The Outer Banks of North Carolina
Late September 2012
The full moon rose, lighting the sandy beach. Stars and sea spray twinkled in its clear reflection. The surf rolled endlessly, and Claire Winslow stood in her thin summer gown, steps from the porch of the house she had rented, remembering the night she first saw Jack Porter. Remembering the brewing hurricane, and the storm that had chewed up and spit back her life at her—
The night she had made love with a man who was not her fiancé.
She closed her eyes against the clutch in her heart. Had she given up everything for an incredibly foolish act of passion?
Chiding herself, she whispered. “What does it matter now?” Don’t ever tell him. Lying to the man she had planned to marry was not something she’d wanted to do—an omission of truth was not her style either. But no matter, since she had broken off the relationship and Rick likely never wanted anything to do with her again.
She’d left Rick. Left her home, her job. Cincinnati. Him. Everything.
It was done.
She sighed, letting breath ease out of her throat slowly, calming her. Pushing away the black, like Vicki, her psychic friend and confidant, had taught her. Get rid of the negative; bring in the light.
A soft hand rested on her shoulder.
Had he returned? Jack?
Eyes closed, she listened for his heartbeat, waited for the warmth of his breath against her neck. Paused for the hush of his voice. It had to be him. There was no one else around on this isolated area of Ocracoke Island.
She fell back in time to that night when she had surrendered to the power of her lover’s kiss. Of his tender and warm embrace that entranced her soul and took it captive. He had met her here and had laid claim to her body and soul. Had he come back for her now, to make her his own, forever?
Please God, let it be him.
Turning, she reined in her anticipation, but as her gaze settled on the man’s face, backlit somewhat, by the porch light, she gasped and jerked back.
“Claire, I had to see you.”
She exhaled deeply, a bit disoriented. “Rick. How did you find me?”
“I… I followed you. Have been watching you.”
“You what?
“Claire…” His voice was soft, alluring, but the look on his face was harsh. “Claire, come with me. I will give you everything you ever dreamed. I love you, honey. Come back. Say it was all a mistake, that you love me and want us to be together. We will be together, Claire.”
She inched back a little, somewhat alarmed. This was Rick, after all. The man she’d known for half her life, and whom she had planned to marry. But she was instantly frightened at his tone. Perhaps the devil-spawned look on his face had triggered her concern. She mustered some courage from deep inside. “You need to leave, Rick.”
Fire leapt into his eyes. “Not unless you leave with me.”
“Rick, this is ridiculous. We’ve discussed this. I’m starting a new life. And I’m very sorry to be so blunt—” She backed away. “Now, please go.” She hated the way it all sounded. “Make it easy on both of us.”
Rick stepped forward. “No. Not without you, Claire.”
Shaking her head, she answered quickly. “That’s not possible.”
He grasped her arm.
She jerked it away. “No, Rick!”
“You don’t understand, Claire. You don’t have a choice.”
One more step backward. “Oh, but I do! What are you going to do, kidnap me?”
Rick’s gaze drifted across the dune, to his right. Her gaze followed to two men standing beside her Honda. Slowly, Rick turned back to peer into her eyes. “If I have to.”

Maddie James #MondayMashup - Feb 1 2016

So, tomorrow we get to know if winter is staying or going, right? Don't forget to check on the groundhog's predictions. I'm all for jetting right on in to spring now. How about you?

Upcoming Release! My editor and I are in the final rounds of my next release. Wind Ridge will definitely be coming your way in February. This story has been rolling around in my head for years, and was actually written some time ago. It just needed a lot of work--and soon it will be ready.

Set in Kentucky horse country, this romantic suspense story brings Bekah McCauley back home to Kentucky after ten years in New York. She left the Big Apple under circumstances she'd rather not share with her family--yet--and all she really wants is time to heal and recover. But the fox hunter next door seems determined to infiltrate her peace and quiet--not only with his noisy fox hounds running amok over her land and trampling her garden, but with his Alpha male, take-charge attitude running roughshod over her heart.

Watch this space for release news coming soon!

My #Newsletter goes out on the first weekend of every month. This is where I share my monthly giveaway and others advanced news to my readers. If you haven't signed up yet to get this exclusive information, you can do that here before the next one comes out!

New cover! My October 2015 release, Tempt Me, has a new look. This book has been co-released by two entities. Vasko Books released this book at iBooks only. My own publishing imprint has published it to the remainder of the retailers and in print. The cover designed by Vasko definitely says it's a sexy book--and it is. But this book is also a romantic thriller--and I don't think the cover says that. I have no control over the cover at iBooks, but I can change it elsewhere and I have. Check out the newer, hopefully more suspenseful cover for Tempt Me!

Until next Monday. Have a great week!
